Queen Madrid- Reflection #2
Queen Madrid
Voting is only one of the many ways that citizens can participate in public decision making, to make difference in our lives and communities and reimagine a future that works for all of us.
Congress decides everything from how much money goes towards school funds, Medicare, how much taxes you must pay. The President is in charged of the armed forces, picks Supreme Court judges that decide on key issues such as abortion or healthcare expansion. And local elected officials, from city council to school board members determine our quality of life where we live. These decisions, made by people we elect to take office, affect our communities, our families, and our future.
I, myself, am not eligible to vote yet but even if I can’t vote, the policy the elect officials make still affects me and everyone else. Getting involved doesn’t always mean casting a ballot at the polls, we all can make an enormous impact by supporting our community and other eligible voters who we have in mind.
GROUP 1
The first group presentation was all about the voting process in the United States, the Pros and Cons and the importance of voting. They explained clearly what an electoral college is, what are the different voting methods such as Voting by mail, Voting Early and Voting on Election Day.
The Deadline for voting is November 5, 2024.
COMMENTS:
I really like their choice of background; it looks very presentable, and they integrated some pictures that are very informative. I learned a lot.
GROUP 2
The second group presentation was all about the Immigration Policies in the United States, each candidate’s policy proposals such as Kamala Harris’s proposal about advocating for the bipartisan border bill that would increase resources and change policies to close loopholes that are being exploited by criminal cartels. Donald Trump’s proposal on immigration is centered around the idea of mass deportation of millions of undocumented migrants. He also seeks to end birthright citizenships to those born from illegal immigrants which he advocated since 2018.
As an immigrant resident that does not have the right to vote yet, I have to wait for years before I can participate, and this roadblock can cause to take a very long time to be eligible and some may never be able to at all.
Immigrants are a big a reason as to why our country is very diverse in ideas, creations, and culture. They get to introduce and share their own culinary recipes, spread their creativity through music, etc.
Voting is only one of the many ways that citizens can participate in public decision making, to make difference in our lives and communities and reimagine a future that works for all of us.

COMMENTS:
Their presentation slides are readable, good choice for background’s color and do not have long sentences to read. Their voices were loud this time, and we were able to focus on what they were saying. They also put a lot of pictures.
GROUP 3
Our group presentation is all about Education Policies in United States. We started off with school shooting and what could be done in that situation. We also talked about bullying and book banishing. Pros and Cons of having a school uniform and its impact on its students.
Bullying has always been a key issue regarding schools everywhere around the world. We should teach students, staff and parents about its impact on students and how to implement clear policies on how to handle these incidents.
Some of the Pros of having a school uniform are Identification during excursions, to keep students focused on their education, not their clothes, hand-me-down options for students who cannot afford to buy uniforms every year. Some of the Cons are it does not stop bullying; you can still tell if a person is wearing a worn-down uniform to someone who has a brand new one. Gender expression issues, students cannot let their creativity out if they are restricted on having school uniform every day.
It is also important to know what your rights are as a student such as right to equality, right to freedom of speech, right to privacy, etc.
Some of the landmark cases mentioned that are very important for us students to know are Tinker v. Des Moines and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier.
COMMENTS:
Everyone did a great job and some even asked the audience some questions for a healthy rapport and participation.
GROUP 4
Their presentation is all about Gender Equality, and some of the issues they are facing from the past and to this day.
They talked about PRO life PRO choice for the upcoming elections, having the 4th amendment to be voted Yes or No and voices their opinions. They even interviewed friends and some students on the campus about their opinions regarding the topic. Everyone has their own opinion and should be respected. I remember that they also integrated a photo of the world map, showing which country allows it or strictly prohibits it. As I have seen in the map, most countries allow it to preserve one’s health and to save a person’s life, but there are still countries that strictly prohibits it because of their beliefs and religion.
COMMENTS:
I like the choice of their background, readable and all the information they put on those slides are very informative, important and I learned a lot. It has clear and precise information that they need, no long words needed. I like the video they played at the end, where a 12-year-old is giving a speech about the abortion. It really resonated with me, just imagining if I tried to put myself on her shoes, what should I feel. Her life and my life matter too.
Just beautifully written. I know one day you not only will vote; but if we are all lucky you will run for an office.
